I have two computers on my desk, one linux one a Lenovo windows desktop. However, I have two proprietary software packages that only work on Windows machines. Before it died, it could no longer be upgraded and was basically obsolete when considering new software. But still expensive and has software compatibility issues. The new M1 computers are very nice, fast with long battery life.

In addition, Apple is forcing every machine into 64 bit version software. It can no longer be upgraded to the latest OS. On my retired fixed income, I can no longer afford them. AFAIK, a Mac Pro from 2001 will run El Capitan, but nothing later. Where things start to get painful is when you want the latest Apple LPX – or whatever – and discover it requires an OS your machine won't run. If you're sure you're happy with the current software, I'm sure upgrading the CPU and RAM makes sense. Unfortunately, that strategy wasn't much good when it comes to all the Waves v9 plug-ins I managed to get running, but turned out not to be very reliable. Unfortunately, Mojave was the last macOS to support 32-bit apps, so I've still got it installed on another drive, so I didn't want to wave goodbye to the entire Adobe Creative Suite.
I only did the OS change because I wanted a later version of Logic. It's fine once Logic is running but it's a bit slow when booting and loading apps. Compared to the earlier OS, it's a little slow, and that's despite 12 cores of 3.46GHz processor and 128GB RAM.
